A new Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at London's National Gallery has received rave reviews from critics. The Guardian, The Telegraph, Time Out and The Times all sang the exhibition's praises - with each critic awarding it five stars. The show opens on 14 September, and features more than 60 pieces painted by the Dutch artist, who died in 1890 aged 37.He continued: "The show also marks 100 years since the gallery’s acquisition of Van Gogh’s resplendent Sunflowers (1888), and, thanks to some brilliant hustling on the part of its curators, Cornelia Homburg and Christopher Riopelle (who’ve assembled a stunning array of 61 works, including a least eight from private collections), it represents a crux in the 19th Century Dutch artist’s career."Dr Gabriele Finaldi, the director of the National Gallery, said the show is the gallery's first exhibition entirely dedicated to Van Gogh, and that "museums and collectors had been astoundingly generous in lending great paintings to this show"."This mesmerising show of kaleidoscopic, emotional art brings together work from the last two years of his life, years spent in Provence turning painting inside out and mentally falling apart in the process," he wrote. He concluded: "This isn’t the painting of light like the impressionists, or of reality, this isn’t literal representation, it’s the painting of emotion, and that’s why it’s good: because it means something." The Telegraph's Alastair Sooke compared the exhibition to music, remarking that the paintings would "be bangers, enticing you onto the dancefloor in a jiffy".

A controversial women’s-only museum exhibit could soon re-open in Australia, after an appeal judge overturned a ruling that it breached anti-discrimination laws. The luxurious Ladies Lounge at the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) in Hobart had sought to highlight historic misogyny by banning male visitors from entering. It was forced to shut in May when one affected patron sued the gallery for gender discrimination and won.Kirsha Kaechele, the artist who created the exhibit, called the ruling a "big win". “It took 30 seconds for the decision to be delivered - 30 seconds to quash the patriarchy,” she said in a statement. “Today’s verdict demonstrates a simple truth: women are better than men.” · Mona has a longstanding reputation for being provocative, and the exclusive opulence and pageantry of the the Ladies Lounge - which opened in 2020 and housed some of the museum’s most acclaimed works - is no different.Ms Kaechele said that she had created the space to highlight the exclusion Australian women faced for decades, such as the decision to ban them from drinking in the main section of bars until 1965. She described the exhibit as a “flipped universe” that provided a much needed “reset from this strange and disjointed world of male domination”.Mona had responded by claiming the rejection Mr Lau had felt was part of the artwork - so he hadn't missed out - but the tribunal dismissed that reasoning.

More than three dozen collectors trusted Beard with their artwork, according to the Justice Department release, including a longtime friend, the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist J.A Detroit-area gallery owner was sentenced last week to five years and three months in prison for defrauding photography collectors out of $1.6 million worth of fine art photos, in what the F.B.I.

It was viewed as a ground-breaking event at the time as it was “incredibly rare” for a gallery to dedicate a show to a solo female artist, Wolverhampton Art Gallery said. The forthcoming exhibition has been curated to closely resemble the original, the venue added. It will feature oil paintings, a plaster cast sculpture, sketches, drawings and newly-painted artworks that recreate three of her original paintings which were lost in a 1991 fire.An art gallery is set to recreate an exhibition from 117 years ago when it features work from a pioneering female artist later this year.“The exhibition not only illuminates her talent, her inspirations and her influences but in so doing, her inner thoughts, social and ethical values are also revealed,” she said. Painted Dreams: The Art of Evelyn De Morgan will be held at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from 19 October to 9 March.“In some small way, I hope that my artwork will enable the onlooker to see those lost works once again.” · Jean McMeakin, chair of the De Morgan Trustee Board, said she was delighted to bring the exhibition to Wolverhampton.

Strangely, these watershed events are typically removed from the vehicle which allowed them to be experienced by a wider audience: the exhibition. Artworks inspired by Dartmoor will be the focus of a four-month exhibition at a Devon museum. Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM) is hosting the show called Dartmoor: A Radical Landscape from 19 October until 23 February. Film, photography and land art - which use natural materials to make art in the landscape - would be on display along with two works from Alex Hartley and Ashish Ghadiali commissioned by RAMM for the exhibit, organisers said.Two specially commissioned pieces of art will feature at the event in Devon running for four months.Lara Goodband, RAMM's contemporary art curator, said she hoped the exhibition would bring "urgent issues" involving Dartmoor to wider attention. Ms Goodband said the national park had become synonymous recently with the wild camping legal battles involving it. In July 2023, the National Park Authority successfully appealed a High Court ruling made six months earlier which gave Dartmoor landowners the right to remove people camping in the wild. The Court of Appeal said wild camping could be classed as an open-air recreation, which is allowed in the park under the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985.Ms Goodband said: "My hope is that this exhibition’s attention to urgent issues will bring renewed re-focus to this 'wild' place, a landscape that stimulates debate and continues to inspire creativity."
